Somerset Academies of Texas Board Recognizes Exceptional Students at October Meeting

At the October 17, 2023, Board Meeting of the Somerset Academies of Texas, the achievements of several exceptional students were celebrated and recognized. These students have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments during the first cycle of the 2023-2024 school year, and they have brought pride and distinction to the Somerset Academy community.

Destiny Herrera, Somerset Academy Brooks Class of 2024

Bonnie Salas, Principal of Somerset Academy Brooks, spoke highly of Destiny Herrera, a remarkable student from the Class of 2024. Destiny received the prestigious Google Scholarship from R3 Student Outreach, which is a remarkable achievement in itself. This scholarship opens doors for Destiny to earn Google Career Certificates in fields like Cyber Security, Digital Marketing, E-Commerce, and IT Support. What's truly remarkable is that the scholarship covers the entire cost of certification and offers promising candidates access to in-demand job opportunities with top employers upon completion.

Destiny's journey at Somerset Academy Brooks began in the 5th grade, and she has been an integral part of the academy ever since. Currently, she is taking three dual credit courses, demonstrating her dedication to her education. Her future aspirations include becoming a UTSA Roadrunner, where she plans to pursue her degree in Computer Science. Destiny is also the Class of 2024 Vice President, a member of the Robotics Club, Student Council, and Powerlifting. In her spare time, she enjoys writing fiction and sewing. Her hard work and dedication have truly paid off, and her commitment to education is an inspiration to all.

Principal Bonnie Salas expressed her pride in Destiny, stating, "Destiny's success is a testament to her dedication and hard work. Her journey from the 5th grade to receiving the Google Scholarship is remarkable and a testament to the excellent education and support system at Somerset Academy Brooks. We are excited to see her continue to thrive and succeed in her academic and career pursuits."

Miley Gloria, Somerset Academy Brooks, Class of 2024

Miley Gloria, a student in the Class of 2024 at Somerset Academy Brooks, has achieved an academic milestone that is truly commendable. Miley is not only a top-ranking student at Somerset Brooks but is also a Palo Alto College dual credit student, currently tackling nine college courses during this academic year. Her dedication and hard work have positioned her to earn her Associates of Science degree this spring, an accomplishment that is both impressive and inspiring.

Miley's commitment to academic excellence has also earned her recognition from the College Board's National Recognition Program. She was one of 72,000 students from across the country to receive the National Hispanic Recognition Award. This award celebrates her outstanding achievements in the classroom and on College Board assessments.

Principal Bonnie Salas commended Miley, saying, "Miley's academic achievements are a source of pride for our entire school community. She has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to her education, and her recognition by the College Board is well-deserved. Miley is a shining example of what hard work and dedication can achieve."

Renesh Rajesh Appadurai, Somerset Academy Oaks

TaLisa Wilson, Principal of Somerset Academy Oaks, proudly acknowledged Renesh Rajesh Appadurai for his outstanding accomplishments. Renesh has demonstrated exceptional consistency by achieving iReady Stretch Growth for three consecutive years. His commitment to growth and learning is truly commendable and sets a great example for his peers.

Principal TaLisa Wilson remarked, "Renesh's dedication to his studies and consistent growth is truly exceptional. He embodies the spirit of continuous improvement, and we are proud to have him as part of the Somerset Academy Oaks family."

Karina Gomez, Somerset Academy Lone Star

Karina Gomez, a student at Somerset Academy Lone Star, has not only excelled academically but has also embodied the school's core values. She is recognized for her academic performance and her outstanding demonstration of the Lone Star core values, which include being respectful, building relationships, being responsible, noble in repairing harm, and always stepping back into routines.

Lily Collins, Principal of Somerset Academy Lone Star, applauded Karina, saying, "Karina's achievements and commitment to our core values reflect the character and dedication we aim to foster at Somerset Academy Lone Star. We are proud of her accomplishments and her embodiment of our school's principles."

Ian Brooks & Eliana Freiburg, Somerset Academy Collegiate

Two exceptional students from Somerset Academy Collegiate, Ian Brooks and Eliana Freiburg, were recognized for their remarkable community-based projects.

Ian Brooks, an 8th-grade student who is already taking high school courses, received a $2000 seed grant to fund his project, "Feed the Homeless." Ian partners with Community Under the Bridge and actively participates in preparing and serving meals to the San Antonio homeless community. He also sets up his own booth every second Sunday of the month, providing fresh fruit and healthy snacks. Ian's dedication to helping those in need is a testament to his caring nature.

Eliana Freiburg, a 12th-grade student, received a $1500 seed grant for her project, "SEL for Teachers." She has worked with local staff and the community to develop a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Professional Development program to support teachers. Her program includes counseling presentations, tips on time management and self-care, as well as valuable take-away documents to help educators.

Cory Oliver, Deputy Superintendent of Somerset Academies of Texas, praised Ian and Eliana's initiatives, stating, "Ian and Eliana are exemplary in their commitment to making a positive impact in their communities. Their projects not only showcase their leadership but also their deep concern for the well-being of others."

In celebrating these exceptional students, the Somerset Academies of Texas Board Meeting on October 17, 2023, highlighted the outstanding achievements and the unwavering dedication of these young scholars. Their accomplishments serve as an inspiration to their peers and the entire Somerset Academy community, demonstrating the possibilities that lie ahead through hard work, dedication, and a commitment to excellence in education.
